Free Motion Friday – X & + Block

Happy Friday Peeps! My computer crashed exactly 7 times drawing FMF today, but I powered through for you guys :D.

Today I’m sharing How I did the quilting on the X&+ blocks on this quilt. Because I was so happy with how they turned out. I want to do an entire quilt of these blocks now so that I can quilt them like this!

This is a X&+block.

I started by marking the center of the + and the centers of the ends of the + as well.

Then I found a curved ruler that gave me the right curve (on this quilt, The Quilted Pineapple 15) and connected the corner to the center.

Then I continued my way around, making petals.

Then, using the same curved ruler, I echoed 1/4″ away from the petals.

I used the same curved ruler to connect the corners of the grey squares to the center marking I had made.

I echoed 1/4″ from these stitching marks, then filled with some loops. I also filled the petals with feathers.

Thats this week! This design went super fast, so I hope you get a chance to try! If you’d like your quilt to be a part of FMF, email a picture of it to Kathleen(at)

Later days!

  1. What a great post! I love when you “show your work”…it is so helpful to the rest of us home quilters. I’m apt to put feathers every where I can. This was particularly innovative of you to use them in the x’s and +’s. Great job…thank you for sharing.

  2. Absolutely gorgeous.     Thanks for showing that to me.    I shall head off and try and peace something and try it out.   You do such lovely work.   Kathleen V

  3. I’m sure you have mentioned this elsewhere, but I am curious what software you use for drawing/auditioning your quilting designs?

  4. Just stunning! I love quilting that makes you stop and really makes you look at what was done and then wonder how you can possibly do it too. Lucky for us you show us how 😉

I do wonder if you did it block by block or found some way to make as many elements as possible continuous?
