Free Motion Friday - Joy's Quilt
HAPPY FRIDAY!! In Camrose today is "Midnight Madness" so The Sewing Center is open until MIDNIGHT with our BEST SALE EVER! So if you live locally, you're definitely going to want to stop by. Because it's going to be pretty amazing. But on to FMF..
Today, we have Joy's quilt.
I'm not going to lie to you guys... this is the type of quilt that makes me sort of drool and wish I was quilting... All those squares to play with, almost solid fabrics so the quilting will show up... it's a dream.
Rather than draw on the quilt, I just drew out some different idea's for quilting squares. There are a million more. But I'd have the most fun playing with different ideas.
Joy did ask:
Would you change colours as you go? Do you quilt every block changing thread colours as needed, then advance your quilt or do you do all one colour on the whole quilt then roll back and select the next colour
And the answer... I would change colours as I go. I tend to quilt in passes, so I do all of one thread colour that I need to do before advancing the quilt, then the next, then the next, then advancing the quilt and starting over again. I don't quilt the whole quilt with one colour then roll back and do the next colour. But that's mostly a personal preference thing.
Some of the smaller squares don't need much quilting at all. An "X" or something quick and easy will be more effective than something dense in these tiny squares.
Lets face it, there are a million dot-to-dot variations you can do in a square... and I love them all.
One of my favourite things to do in a square, is split it in half diagonally, echo on both sides of the line, then do two different background fills, one on each side. I like to make sure the two differ in scale and shape so I can really see that the two are different.
And, my perpetual favourite, flying geese :D
Also, on this quilt, I'm not quilting anything in the sashing... they are so small, any quilting in them is going to be lost anyway.
So that's it for me! If you'd like your quilt to be a part of FMF, email a picture of it to kathleen(at)kathleenquilts.com
Later days! Kathleen.
