Free Motion Friday - Jennifer's Quilt

Happy Friday!!!! Today, we have Jennifer's quilt.

All that negative space. Enough to have me salivating a bit :D

What I want to do is this:

Extend the flying geese to the edges of the quilt. Similarly to how I did the flying geese here:

Except all the way. The only problem with this plan? Keeping all those diagonal lines straight on a longarm. I'd have to actually mark all those lines, and mark them before they went on the frame in a way that the lines would still be there when I got to them. The logistics make me a bit crazy. And so, I gave up on that plan, and found a new one.

Or assume I found a new one. I've written this part before coming up with the new plan. So if the post suddenly ends here, guess I didn't come up with anything.

Ok, here we go.

So I started by drawing fairly random sized boxes around each of the flying geese sections. These are much easier to manage than giant triangles.

Then I filled each box with the diagonal lines extending from the geese that I wanted.

I put the picture again so we can see what happened -- I drew a line extending from the flying geese, echoed it 1/4" on each side, then filled the lines with alternating motifs. I really wanted the two motifs I quilted to vary in density and shape, so that it really showed that they were different designs.  Because Jennifer's geese are two different sized, the spaces won't be as uniform, but I still want to use this theory.

Then, inside the boxes in the area's where I had no geese to exten, I've drawn either vertical or horizontal lines. I'm going to quilt these the same way I did my geese lines, using the same width, the same echo, and the same motifs.

Then I echoed around each of the boxes (probably about a 1/2") I want this echo to be wide enough to be noticeable, but not so wide that it just looks like I forgot to quilt part of my quilt.

Then, I'd go in and do a fill throughout the rest of the background area... probably something swirly or flowey to contrast with the angularity inside of the boxes.

I'm a little unsure on scale, but likely I'd just leave the Geese un-quilted. I might do a dot-to-dot quilting inside them if they are too big to leave unquilted.
