Free Motion Friday - AvantGarde Tarnished Windmill
Happy Friday Peeps! It's a good Friday as I get to leave work early because I'm headed for Jasper for a weekend of snowboarding! Yippee! My favourite non-quilting thing to do.
Anyways, this week.
This week I'm going to talk about the quilting I did in my AvantGarde quilt.
First, around the centre and in the windmill blocks. I used a curved ruler (the Quilted Pineapple Curve #20) to quilt the first curve, then echoed 1/4", 1/2", 1/4" out from it -- and quilted bubbles in the 1/2" bubble. To quilt the lines inside the curve, I took a ruler, placed one corner of the ruler in the centre of the block, then used it like a compass and marked lines that came to the centre, but were 3/4" apart at the top... someday I'll write better instructions or maybe a video, but with my computer on the fritz, I don't have the patience for it right now. Then, the easy wave fill on the outside, and ribbon candy in the windmill.
In the star I quilted a ribbon candy border all the way around the outside of the star. I actually love how this turned out -- I think it did a great job of ensuring that the star stood out, and didn't blend into the windmills-- which I was worried about when it was just a quilt top. Then I did some dot-to-dot in the points, and filled with the easy wave fill again.
In the outside border I did a 1/4" echo around one side of the piece, and then filled with ribbon candy. For the inner border, I treated it as though it was a pieced border, rather than one piece of fabric, and McTavished the white spaces, and did various things, mainly ribbon candy, in the prints in the fabric.
And that's about it! I had the most fun with this quilt, despite the fact that I was pretty sick the whole time I was quilting it :D.
If you'd like your quilt to be a part of FMF, email a picture of it to kathleen(at)kathleenquilts.com
Later days! Kathleen.
