Free Motion Friday - Jessica's Quilt

Happy Friday Peeps!  I'm home from QuiltCon and settling back into my normal life. Luckily, my normal life is pretty awesome, so it's not so tough :D

This week, we've got Jessica's quilt!

I love clamshell quilts. Seriously. I think they look so cool. My grandmother quilts almost every quilt with an all over clamshell design, so I come by it naturally. As much as I love them however, I find them difficult to quilt. It's been a couple years since I've actually tried, but I've got a couple failed attempts that I don't show much :D So trying to come up with some idea's for this one...

My first plan is always, to echo the outer curve of the clamshell once or twice, then to fill them with a design, straight lines or swirls or whatever I'm in the mood for. I think it look awesome, but if you don't use a curved ruler to match or almost-match the curve of your clamshell, this can go awry easily. (trust me, I know :D)

So the, I know I have a straight ruler, then I don't have to worry about having the right curved ruler. So why not alternative horizontal & vertical lines in each row of clams? Another cool idea, but I would be so bored of straight lines by the end of quilting.

So then, I thought, why not mix the two ideas? Echoed curves and the straight lines?

Or maybe, instead of just echoes, I should fill in one of the rows of echo's with bubbles to add something extra.

And I never made a decision. The good news is, it's not my quilt, so I don't have too. What's your favourite way to quilt clamshells?
